Family Vacation Inspiration: Atlantis Resort
Are you dreaming about an island getaway with your family? Read on to learn more about my views on the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas….
Ok, so you have probably seen the website, a commercial, or know someone who has gone to Atlantis. Located on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, it is about a 2.5 hour flight from NYC if you go non-stop. Our family decided to check out this resort and I am happy to share with you our experience.
What made us choose Atlantis you may ask? Short answer, fun in the sun! We were looking for a destination that was family friendly, that would keep all of us occupied with a variety of activities, and that wouldn’t be too long of a flight given that we were going for a shorter time.
Usually when we visit an island destination, we rent a car to maximize our mobility and get the biggest “bang” for our buck in terms of freedom to explore. However, for this getaway (which was 4 nights/5 days) we just wanted to stay on the resort so we opt’d to purchase round-trip airport transfers instead.
Our experience: Airport transfers, depending on your party size and if you choose private or group transfers, can be expensive. I’d recommend booking this in advance of your trip. If you will be staying on the resort and don’t plan to venture out, you may want to book a transfer that offers a stop at a local grocery store/ supermarket. This way you can stock up on beverages or snack before getting to the resort.
Going in October, we knew there could be a chance that the weather would not be on our side. Traveling to the Caribbean during hurricane season can be a gamble but I am happy to report that while we were there, it was sunny and in the mid-80’s. Booking the resort during this time period also got us a reasonable rate and less crowds. Keep in mind that during the “off-season” not everything is open everyday. On check-in, you are provided with a weekly schedule of events and a list of what restaurants and activities are available and when. Some events may only happen a few times a week or even once a week so make sure you jot down your “can’t miss” events.
We stayed in a 2 bedroom family harbour suite in the Reef tower. Essentially it is a studio and 1 bedroom that are next to each other and connect through a reasonably sized “foyer”. Our family was very comfortable in this space which comes with a living area (with sleeper sofa), fully equipped kitchen (and kitchenette in the studio), 2.5 baths, and a very nice balcony in both rooms (our balconies did not “connect”). We found that the space was clean and had all the comforts of home.
Our experience: We used a local grocery delivery service so we could cook a few meals in our room. We also downloaded a local food delivery app which brought meals right to the lobby for the times we did not want to eat at the resort. We found these to be very helpful options!
The resort itself is beautiful! I was truly inspired by the landscaping and the thoughtful touches like hammocks in the shade to relax. The property itself is pretty big and I would not suggest trying to tackle everything in one day. The Reef itself is a bit further away from all the “action” but close enough that you could walk in 8-10 minutes to places like Aquaventure park. Thankfully, there are complimentary shuttles that come like clockwork every few minutes. We found the staff to be so helpful and truly kind, no matter who we asked for directions or recommendations, we were met with a friendly reply.
Dining options abound at Atlantis, whether looking for a quick bite or a formal sit down dinner, you can find it here. Keep in mind popular places usually require a reservation and on the website they recommend booking these in advance. While we did not dine at any of the formal restaurants, we found the casual dining spots accessible and tasty.
Our experience: We dined al a carte but food is an expense you must think about prior to arrival. Most food places we saw will run you at least $20 per person, per meal. There is an “all-inclusive” option which was $150 per person, per day when we visited. We did not go with this plan because we felt it offered a more limited selection of restaurants.
Regarding the activities, we were thoroughly entertained during our stay. From the water park, to the marine life, and the variety of live entertainment, we had a great time. Just to give you a sense of our travel party, there was my 4 year old daughter, my sister (in her 30’s), my mom (I am forbidden to tell you her age lol), and me (I’m 42), and we each found something to do that we enjoyed. Watching my daughter play in the children’s play zone was the highlight of the trip for me! I also loved seeing all the marine life, the Dig and predator’s reef were among my favorites. My sister and I went to a comedy show that we both thought was hilarious and played a few games in the casino, which had a live band playing that was very good. Check out the marina to view the mega yachts, shopping, and take a quick walk over to Margaritaville.
Overall, Atlantis was a solid choice for our family and I would love to help you plan your Atlantis adventure next! Send us an inquiry for more information and to book!
